Village residents are being warned there’s more disruption ahead for drivers when one of Ruddington’s busiest roads is closed again for major repairs.
Earlier this month Clifton Road was shut to traffic for 24 hours after Severn Trent Water workmen turned up to fix a burst water main on a Sunday (January 10th 2021) but there was no one available to fill in the hole and patch the road until the next day. Now highways officials have decided the already well-worn stretch of road needs major attention, following this latest water damage, and so plan to completely resurface it.
Consequently, Clifton Road is to be totally closed again between its junctions with Camelot Street and Old Station Drive from 8.00am on Monday 25th January 2021 until 4.00pm on Thursday 28th January 2021.* This ‘Temporary Prohibition of Driving’ means Ruddingtonians living to the west of the blockage, including all the residents of Old Station Drive and Pasture Lane estates, will once more have no vehicular access to the village centre. For the rest of Ruddington, the diversionary route for drivers heading towards Clifton is several miles long. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to get through, however, and residents on Old Station Drive are being reassured that vehicular access to their properties will be maintained throughout via Clifton Lane.
Even during ‘lockdown’ and with the schools closed, the popularity of the route inevitably will result in more inconvenience and delays for many motorists – and once again take out Nottingham City Transport’s Navy 3 service. The operator has confirmed this bus will not serve Clifton Road, Ruddington Village, Ruddington Lane, Wilford Road or Ruddington Lane during the closure – meaning a walk to the village centre to catch the Green 10 for city bound passengers. Old Station Drive resident Wayne Swift contacted Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) to ask if the Ruddington properties beyond the road closure might miss out on their grey bin collection. RBC has responded: “Our teams will still collect bins in this area next week. Should there be any properties that they cannot visit, another team will return later in the week for a follow-up collection. Please make sure your bin is out for 7am on your collection day as normal.”
Reacting to the closure news, Louise Newcombe-Warsop comments: “Shoot me now” whilst Rebecca Wakefield jokes: “No one’s visiting me, then… Oh wait… They can’t anyway!” Pasture Lane resident Craig Baum points out: “Don’t forget the Clifton – Gotham (Nottingham Road) is also closed next week!” However, James Woodford says: “About time. It’s needed doing for far too long. The village is easily walkable.”
Nottinghamshire County Council is apologising in advance for the disruption which will be caused by this essential highway repair work.

Despite Sunday’s heavy snow, the closure of Clifton Road went ahead as planned on Monday for Severn Trent to partly resurface the short stretch between Camelot Street and Old Station Drive.
Not only that, as can be seen below, it is now open again after being finished this afternoon – a day and a half ahead of schedule. NCT’s Navy 3 bus has also returned to its usual Ruddington route as of 3.39pm.
However, villagers are wondering if it was really worth the two and a half days of inconvenience to motorists – not to mention the resulting danger to pedestrians – given the road surface at either end of it is still in poor condition.
Paul Carver comments: “What a complete botch job! The entrance to Camelot Street is riddled with pot holes, made massively worse by the water main bursting and washing away the road surface, and all they’ve done is do a 6ft strip…”
